My Bio
My name is John Murphy Jr. I am a graduate of the University of Massachusetts with BFA in Painting and Graphic Design. I am employed as the Art Director of Balboni Associates Advertising in Springfield, MA. The Graphic Design work I do is varied. We have a large amount of diverse clients, ranging from small start-up companies to large corporations; with local, national and international markets. The company was founded by Armando Balboni, A local businessman and accomplished sculptor/painter and art teacher who's work has appeared in national and international competitions. Armando passed away unexpectedly in 1993. His partner Lucy Peterson now runs the company. Under Lucy Peterson's guidance the company has prospered, and we look forward to a successful future.
Since I graduated from UMASS, Graphic Design work takes most of my creative time. However, in studying the Arts & Crafts movement over the years I discovered the California Impressionists from the first quarter of the 20th century. Lately I have begun painting "En Plein Air". This is a French term for painting outdoors or on the spot in an effort to simply catch the atmospheric effects on a scene in a fleeting moment of time on the canvas. Painting this way is usually done on a small scale, often under 20 inches. It is meant to be completed in several hours on location. This type of painting has simple unpretentious attitude and I enjoy it immensely.

My Graphic Work
My Graphic work is a reductive style characterized by a simplification of form with an emphasis on muted atmospheric hues. The number of colors in an image are minimized. My work is an interpretation of the inspiration I find in various forms of early 20th century artwork and design, many early 20th century artists were influenced by Arthur Wesly Dow.
The work is executed in Gouache which is an opaque watercolor paint with a flat(not glossy) finish. The paintings have the feel of a early 20th century woodbock print or poster.
Bradbury frieze is an example of an Arts & Crafts wallpaper border currently being produced by the Bradbury & Bradbury, Co.
I also find inspiration some of the early 20th poster designers like Ludwig Hohlwein as well as other turn-of -the-century Graphic Artists like Will Bradley and Dard Hunter.
